Procrastination is something we all experience in business – and it can really derail our results (aka revenue and profits!). One of the fastest ways to change this is to become aware of your limiting stories during the day. Let me explain:
Something most of us (business owners) don’t realise is how much our own stories are holding us back.
Throughout the day, stories pop up into our minds that (if we let them) move us away from our goals.
Most of us don’t even realise it’s happening though!
The story can pop up so quickly and if we don’t catch it, it can lead us to procrastination.
And procrastination can then lead us to a decrease in sales and profits in business.
So what kinds of stories show up for us as business owners? And how can we overcome this procrastination?
I thought I’d share one of the common stories that pops up for me.
When I get the idea to write an email, update my website, create a new guide, record an audio course or do anything else… my mind will sometimes say something like:
“That’s going to be so boring. Do you really want to do that?”
Years ago, when that story would pop up, I’d agree with it. And then, I’d AVOID taking that business action.
I’d avoid writing the email. I’d avoid updating my website. I’d avoid writing the blog post. I’d avoid doing the live stream. I’d avoid recording the audio. And so on.
Basically, I’d procrastinate.
Why? Because I was listening to the story in my mind that said that it would be SO boring.
Since then, I’ve learned to catch that story when it shows up and take aligned action DESPITE the story being there.
This is how I overcome procrastination these days:
1. I get the idea to write an email to my list for example.
2. The story pops up in my mind that says : “That’s going to be SO boring to write. Do you really feel like doing that?”
3. I notice the story showing up in my mind.
4. I label it: “Oh there’s the It’s Going To Be Boring Story“. By labelling it, it allows me to get some distance between me and my mind. It allows me to realise that it’s just a story, a thought. That I don’t have to buy into it.
5. I ask myself the following question: ‘what would be the aligned action to take that would move me towards my values and my goals?’
6. I take the action of writing the email. EVEN if the story that it’ll be boring is still there.
This little tool has helped me SO MUCH in being more productive, but also it’s allowed me to make the real tangible progress in my business. Increasing my leads, my sales, and my profits.
So this is what I recommend you do!
Next time you notice a limiting story pop up in your mind and you feel yourself going into procrastination mode, go through these 4 steps:
1. Notice the story. Catch it before it hooks you.
2. Label the story. Give it an actual name. “Oh that’s the blank story again!”
3. Ask yourself, what action will help me move towards my values and help me achieve the goals that matter to me?
4. Take the action (even if the story is still there).
With practice, you’ll notice how many stories your mind comes up with to slow you down. But the cool thing is that we don’t have to get hooked by the story.
Instead, we can notice the story, label it, and take an aligned action anyway.
You’ll see how much this affects your productivity and business results!
I’d love for you to share in the comments the kinds of stories that come up for you that tend to slow you down in business!
